A patio is a large, open surface, so the biggest risk is that it looks flat and repetitive. The best patio patterns add visual interest across a big area and tie the space to your home's style. Here are the three we reach for most.
Random Ashlar — natural and forgiving

Random ashlar combines multiple paver sizes in a non-repeating layout that mimics natural cut stone. On a big patio it is ideal — there is no obvious repeat to make the space feel like a grid, and the mixed sizes give it a relaxed, high-end, old-world character. It is our most-requested patio look.
Herringbone — structured and timeless

If you prefer a more structured, symmetrical patio, herringbone delivers a classic, tailored look — and as a bonus it is the strongest interlock, so it easily handles the weight of outdoor kitchens, fire pits and furniture. A diagonal 45° herringbone feels especially custom.
Stack Bond — clean and modern

For a modern home, a stack-bond grid of large-format pavers gives a crisp, architectural surface. Keep it to seating and dining areas rather than under heavy point loads, since the aligned joints offer little interlock.
Frame it and mix it
- Borders: a contrasting border row defines the patio's edge and makes the field pattern look intentional.
- Two-tone fields: blending two colors within the field adds depth on a large surface — easy to preview in the designer.
- Tie it together: matching your patio pattern or border to an adjacent walkway makes the whole yard feel designed.
