Connecticut runs through dozens of freeze-thaw cycles every winter — water gets into the ground, freezes, expands, and thaws, over and over. Why pavers beat a concrete slab here

A paver surface is hundreds of small units with sand-filled joints between them. It flexes with ground movement instead of cracking, and the joints let the whole field shift a hair and settle back. If a single paver ever is damaged, you replace that one paver — not the whole surface.
The base is what actually survives winter
Here is the part most homeowners don't hear: the paver you pick matters far less than the base beneath it. Almost every failed paver surface we're called to fix failed below the surface, not on it. What lasts through CT winters:
- A deep, properly compacted gravel base — this is the foundation; too thin or poorly compacted and it will heave no matter what is on top.
- Drainage — the base has to shed water so meltwater never sits and freezes under the pavers. This is the number-one cause of heaving.
- Edge restraint — locks the border so the field can't spread apart over years of freeze-thaw movement.
- Polymeric joint sand — firms up the joints, resists weeds and washout, and keeps the units working together.
Which pavers hold up best
- Concrete pavers: the workhorse — strong, freeze-thaw rated, huge range of colors and sizes, and the best value for driveways.
- Clay brick pavers: keep their color for decades and suit historic New England homes; make sure they're rated for exterior/paving use.

Any quality paver will survive Connecticut winters if it sits on a deep, well-drained, compacted base with locked edges and firm joints. Skimp on that base and even the best stone will heave.
