Historic & Specialty Masonry in New Haven, Hartford & Middlesex County
Innovative Masonry & Restoration
Innovative Masonry & Restoration specializes in skilled masonry work on older, historic, and architecturally complex properties across New Haven County, Hartford County, and Middlesex County. This is the work that requires real masonry knowledge — not just a crew with a mixer. If your home or building has brownstone details, fieldstone foundations, aged brick, or unusual construction that most contractors won't touch, this is what we do.
Historic Home Restoration
Connecticut has an exceptional stock of 19th and early 20th century homes — colonial farmhouses, Victorian-era brick buildings, and brownstone townhouses — all of which require periodic masonry restoration. We repoint with lime-based mortars that are compatible with older brick and stone (not the hard Portland cement mixes that damage historic materials), rebuild deteriorating chimneys and cornices, and restore original masonry details that define the character of the structure.
Brownstone Repair & Restoration
Brownstone is beautiful and fragile. It's particularly vulnerable to spalling — where the face of the stone breaks away in layers after years of freeze-thaw cycles and water infiltration. We assess brownstone deterioration honestly and perform repairs using compatible patching compounds and techniques that match the original profile, texture, and color as closely as possible.
Older & Complex Chimneys
Chimneys on historic homes are often built with unusual construction — corbelled tops, decorative brick patterns, oversized flue configurations, or stone combined with brick. We handle the masonry repairs on these chimneys where a standard chimney company would be out of their depth: repointing unusual joint profiles, replacing ornate brick courses, and rebuilding complex crowns.
Stone Foundation Assessment & Repair
The fieldstone and brick foundations under older Connecticut homes need to be handled with care. We inspect, assess, and repair — scraping out failed mortar and repacking joints with the appropriate mix, resetting stones that have shifted, and addressing chronic moisture problems at the foundation wall. We work with what is there rather than recommending unnecessary replacement.
Specialty & Complex Masonry Challenges
Some masonry projects don't fit a neat category. Unusual site conditions, heritage materials, matching aged brick or stone from a century ago, or complex multi-material construction — these are the projects we take on where others pass. If your project requires real problem-solving and masonry knowledge, contact us to discuss it.
Why Clients Choose Us for Historic Work
- Material Knowledge: We understand the difference between historic lime mortars and modern Portland cement — and why it matters.
- Preservation Approach: We repair and restore rather than demolish and replace.
- Honest Assessment: We tell you what needs to be done and what doesn't — no upselling on work that isn't necessary.
- Experienced with Old Buildings: Older Connecticut construction requires different techniques than new work, and we've been doing it for over 20 years.
